Since 1962, Gobabeb has been conducting environmental research in the Namib Desert. In addition to its highly regarded research, Gobabeb is involved in Training, Sustainable Development, Appropriate Technology, Education, and Environmental Awareness projects.
Gobabeb Research and Training Centre has formed the Namib Ecological Restoration and Monitoring Unit – NERMU. This unit is dedicated to monitoring environmental impacts of mining in the central Namib, to do research on the best ways of restoring biodiversity after mining, to training young Namibians in environmental stewardship and science, and to educating people on the sustainable use of our arid-land resources.
Gobabeb is located at 23°34’S, 15°03’E in the Namib-Naukluft Park, in the Namib Desert–one of the oldest and most spectacular deserts in the world. The nearest town, Walvis Bay, is 120 km away.
